Small Grain Forages

With good forage management practices Small Grains are well suited as a good source of digestible fiber. Together, these qualities promote high rumen function, milk production, and overall animal health.

Our Goals

  • Improved Kinetic Digestibility for Rumen Efficiency
  • Excellent Forage Yields (Silage or Hay)
  • Winter, Spring and Facultative varieties available
  • Superior Milk Production
  • Handles Lagoon Water Well
  • Awnless Varieties available
  • Good Straw Strength
  • Disease Resistant
  • Vigorous Fall Growth
  • Adaptable to many soil types
  • High Grain Yields

Forage mixtures - Benefits

  • Option 1 - (Use forage products with a wide range of maturities - within 10 days) Mixtures often use different species of small grains such as triticale, oats, barley and wheat. As a result, the each component in the formulation will mature differently and in effect widen the harvest window. The early maturing components will provide more tonnage and starches and the later mature components will provide improved digestibility.
  • Option 2 - (Use forage products with a maturities much closer together - within 3 days) It is best to use components that will match maturing closely together giving the producer the ability to harvest the forage at nearly the same maturity. This formulation is specifically selected to give the forage producer the ability to choose to harvest in the boot stage or harvest at soft dough stage.
  • Add on components - Forage Peas and Annual Ryegrass will help significantly increase the forage quality. Increases in NDFd and Protein - Consult with your local nutritionist.
